Moms + daughters, beauty cults, vampires but with squids?

Well, well, well. If it isn’t my new micro-obsession with Mona Awad, a compulsion which compels me to consume all of her available work in millennial binge fashion. This one started perfectly, got weird and really lost me in the middle, and then apologized and became a beloved friend by the end. Vibes are some beguiling and confusing combination of: moms + daughters, beauty cults, vampires but with squids?, protect girlhood, self loathing as a form of actual narcissism, late bloomer learns to love herself and make friends.

Why I picked it up

My new micro-obsession with Mona Awad, a compulsion which compels me to consume all of her available work in millennial binge fashion.

Favorite quotes

“I watched her soul close its eyes inside her body as she stared at the screen.”

“The only journey that matters in the end, Daughter of Noelle.” “Retinol?” I whisper. “The soul. A journey of the soul, of course.”

Would recommend to

Elder millennials who love a dark, sharp, spec fic that makes them feel all the little grown up emo glass shard feelings they need to feel again. And anyone who has ever been a victim of diet culture, botox pressure, or retinol lobbyists. And anyone with an inner goth girl.
