I kind of didn't care about anyone in this book.

A story about two people who can’t talk to other people, in a torturous relationship drawn out over their lives.

It was fine, maybe even good. I enjoyed comparing the show to the book, and it’s a pretty good and true adaptation. I’m really impressed by Sally Rooney’s ability to create intense intimacy through only sparse and specific moments in time, rather than a long narrative.

But I kind of didn’t care about anyone in this book. Also, it has that trope I hate: adults just plain communicating poorly.

Vibes

  • intense intimacy
  • sparse and specific moments
  • adults communicating poorly

Favorite quotes

“She believes Marianne lacks ‘warmth,’ by which she means the ability to beg for love from people who hate her.”

“It feels intellectually unserious to concern himself with fictional people marrying one another. But there it is: literature moves him. One of his professors calls it ‘the pleasure of being touched by great art.’”

Would recommend to

Only to someone who enjoys observing people and disliking them.
