American Fantasy
Owning a bookstore does not make you Ann Patchett.
I talked myself into this one because Emma Straub owns a bookstore, and I thought: bookstore owner who writes fiction — she must be like Ann Patchett. She is not like Ann Patchett. This felt like the literary equivalent of a low-budget reality TV show: hokey characters I couldn’t relate to, a plot that never really arrived, and a general vibe of people doing unrealistic things for unclear reasons. Not my jam at all. Lesson learned: owning a bookstore does not make you Ann Patchett.
